Head Start

In 1965, Head Start began as a comprehensive child development program to serve low-income and vulnerable children. Every year, Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve over a million children in the U.S. The Office of Head Start (OHS) provides federal grant funding and oversight to Head Start programs. To learn more about OHS, please visit: https://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/about-us/article/about-office-head-start .

Head Start programs promote school readiness in children from ages birth to five by delivering services in centers, family child care, and home-based options. Head Start serves children ages three to five while Early Head Start focuses on serving pregnant women and expectant families and children from birth to three.

Early Learning

Children’s readiness for school is shaped by early learning experiences. Through caring and trusted relationships with adults, play, and instruction, infants, toddlers, and preschool age children grow and develop. Social skills, emotional well-being, language, and literacy help build a foundation for children’s success in school and life.

Health

Children’s development is supported by health and developmental screenings, healthy nutrition, oral health and mental health support. Families are connected to community based resources to ensure children receive medical, dental, and mental health services.
