Head Start
In 1965, Head Start began as a comprehensive child development program to serve low-income and vulnerable children. Every year, Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve over a million children in the U.S. The Office of Head Start (OHS) provides federal grant funding and oversight to Head Start programs. Head Start programs promote school readiness in children from ages birth to five by delivering services in centers, family child care, and home-based options. Head Start serves children ages three to five while Early Head Start focuses on serving pregnant women and expectant families and children from birth to three.
